Photography Contest with a Literary Flavor: “Take a Hike in Yoknapatawpha” – Juried, Cash Awards!

Photography Contest Rules and Regulations:

This is a photography contest with a literary flavor. Yoknapatawpha is the fictional county created by William Faulkner in which many of the books are set in his fiction.  William Faulkner, Nobel Prize winning writer was born in New Albany on September 25, 1897.  As part of the Faulkner Literary Festival held annually in his "postage stamp of native soil", this is the first photography contest.  It has a literary flavor that will add meaning and focus to the photographs entered. Following are the contest rules.

Contest photos must be printed as a 5 x 7 or an 8 x 10. Photos from Yoknapatawpha - North Mississippi are acceptable, but Union County photos are preferred. Each photo must be related to  literature, William Faulkner preferred, since New Albany is his "postage stamp of native soil". This contest is part of the 2019 Faulkner Literary Festival. The museum will mount entries in matted frames (Photos will be removed from mats and available for pick up at the end of the exhibit). Photos may be in color or black and white. **Extensive digital manipulation of photographs is prohibited. Limit the use of photo-editing software. Adjusting exposure, color balance, contrast and sharpness is allowed, but highly manipulating colors and content of images is not.

Photography Contest Divisions and Prizes: Adult Professional, Adult Amateur, Student Group A (5-8 grade), & Student Group B (9-12 grade). In each division, 1st place receives $100, 2nd place receives $50, and Third place receives $25. We will have an overall winner that will receive $200.

Contest Objectives: Our objective is to celebrate William Faulkner's use of nature in his writing, and to deepen our connection with Mississippi's beauty in culture, landscapes, people, and nature (including plants and insects).

Contest Entry Fee: $5 per photograph

Contest Registration: Photographers will need to provide the following information with their entry- Name, mailing address, phone & email, entrant division (for students, grade in school and name of school), a photograph title, a Faulkner or other literary quote, where and when photo was taken, and any other information deemed necessary by entrant.

Contest Deadline to enter: May 27th

Exhibit Opening: June 6th- Winners will be announced at the opening.

Exhibit closing: July 10th- all photographs will need to be picked up by its owner on this date.

**Upon approval of entrant, photos may be used for post cards and tourism
